Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM

I had had my Canon 50mm F1.8 for nine months before i decided it was time i upgraded to the F1.4. The feel between the F1.4 and the F1.8 is very different. The 1.8 is an easy to handle and not so intimidating lens.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM review

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 is a pretty unassuming-looking lens. It's not big, it's not flashy and it's not particularly expensive for a fast prime lens. Indeed, the light weight and the plastic finish do give it a faintly cheap feel.

Excellent low light lens

I've had my EF 50mm 1.4 lens for many years. My Canon 6D normally carries a 24-105 L series lens. The 50mm is used when I want to lighten my load or shoot photos indoors with natural light.

The pictures below illustrate the angles of view on 35mm full frame and APS-C camera bodies:
Pros:
  • Excellent image quality when stopped down
  • Essentially no lateral chromatic aberration
  • Fast and accurate autofocus with full-time manual override
Cons:
  • Distinctly soft and 'dreamy' at wider apertures (F1.4-F1.8
  • Bokeh chromatic aberration
  • most visible at wide apertures
  • Vignetting at wide apertures on full frame (essentially disappears by F2.8
  • Somwhat susceptible to flare

Great all purpose lens

I just love this lens on my 5D Mk II. It is lightweight and very sharp. It outperforms my two L lenses, and I am always amazed at the resolution it gives my pictures. I find myself using this more and more since it is so much lighter to carry when I want to shoot all day.
