Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens Review

Ask a bunch of photographers what their favorite lens is - and you will likely hear the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens mentioned. It is sharp, small, light, inexpensive and with an f1.4 aperture, fast . The 50 f/1.4 finds a home with many photographers - from pro to casual - for several reasons.

Canon's 50/1.4 is a bit heavier than the 50/1.8 but it gives you simultaneous AF/MF because of its USM focusing motor . It is one f-stop slower than the 50/1.0 but much lighter weight and less than one-sixth the price.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens Review

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM should probably be considered the best alternative among Canon's four 50mm lenses (in terms of value for the money, overall performance and capabilities). While not as fast as its more expensive 50mm f/1.2L USM variant, this lens performs as well (if not better) pretty much...

Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM Portrait Lens C21-6261-201 review

While it's not tack-sharp when used wide-open, the Canon EF 50mm ƒ/1.4 USM is still quite good, and stopped down to ƒ/4 image quality is excellent. At ƒ/8, it's as sharp as sharp gets. Used wide open however, the lens has some definite issues, and on full-frame, edge performance is remarkably poor.

REVIEW: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at Canon's mid-range 'nifty-fifty'. Standard lenses such as this are popular due to their lightweight and bright maximum aperture.
Pros:
  • Decent resolution across the frame when stopped down
  • Good resistance to flare
  • Low vignetting at maximum aperture
Cons:
  • Barrel distortion may be noticeable in critical applications
  • Quality towards the edges doesn't really excite until stopped down to f/4

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM review by polizonte

This lens was acquired to be used with a 5Dmkii - both were purchased at almost close-out prices so I consider them to be bargains. Shooting mostly from f4-f8, the lens produces sharp images with very little distortion and nice colors.
Pros:
  • sharp @ f4-f8
  • relatively low distortion
  • good focus
Cons:
  • feels delicate
