Dragon Quest Builders review – building on Minecraft's success

A surprisingly successful mash-up between two completely different franchises, whose quiet charms offer a welcome alternative to incessant action and overbearing storytelling.
Pros:
  • The Minecraft elements are neatly explained, and offer a significant amount of freedom for a story-base game
  • Charming script and characters, and some fun twists on the usual JRPG formula
Cons:
  • Compared to Minecraft there are some obvious limitations, especially when digging underground
  • Camera isn't always that helpful
  • Dragon Quest in-jokes will be lost on many

Fantastic Story, Minecraft style.

Dragon quest builders tries to do what Minecraft didn't... Tell a story, and it does it well. You've great story telling mixed with Minecraft building, it's done really well.

This is a good game with some annoying controls

This is a good game with some annoying controls, but you get used to that quickly. It has a lot of reading which may not be suitable for some kids, but my daughter enjoys and I like that it encourages her to read.

Better homes and golems.

Dragon Quest Builders serves as the jumping-off point for a new tale in a new period using an old setting--the storied land of Alefgard from the first Dragon Quest. It's an alternate reality that begins where the original game ends, but with a twist: the hero from the first game didn't defeat the...
Pros:
  • Engrossing crafting and building systems
  • Endearing enemies help the hours fly by
  • Rewarding quests
  • Invasions introduce superb tower-defense gameplay
Cons:
  • Disappointing lack of cross-save given identical content between platforms

Dragon Quest Builders Review – a DQConstruction (PS4)

I have never played an ounce of Minecraft , and I've never had any desire to do so. My eldest son, who's eight years old, is absolutely obsessed with it. He builds some amazing things, and it really taps into that creative mind he has for architecture and construction.
Pros:
  • Charming Dragon Quest visual style
  • Fluid combat
  • Deep crafting system
  • Minecrafting with a purpose
  • Dragon Quest
Cons:
  • Odd glitches with room building
  • Camera does not like enclosed spaces

But perhaps that's just an issue that someone like me, the Lego-perplexed and Minecraft -averse will run into. It's worth it, though, to finally experience joy in creating and crafting. I just needed a little guidance and a reason to build.

Dragon Quest Builders Review – Building a Gem for the Switch

The Switch handles Builders fairly well, although sometimes the control scheme can get a little hairy. Moving the character with the left stick then trying to select items with the left butttons isn't always comfortable, and the camera sometimes misleads me on where I'm dropping an item.
Pros:
  • Great new approach to Minecraft
  • Quirky Dragon Quest humor and music
  • Handheld mode IS THE BEST
Cons:
  • Camera sometimes doesn't cooperate
  • Controls can get uncomfortable at times
  • No auto-saving
  • which can be a game killer

Dragon Quest Builders Review

is totally, thoroughly engaging. Its gameplay is accessible to kids while its dialogue offers enough sly references to keep Dad or Mom amused. Collecting, crafting, and building all sounds familiar, but this package encapsulates so much of the best parts of this creative process and wraps it in...
