Epson Perfection V800 Photo Review

The Epson Perfection V800 Photo scanner delivers top-quality scans for photographic prints, as well as for film (positive or negative) as large as 8 by 10 inches. Although the Epson Perfection V800 Photo ($739.99) is a flatbed scanner—and can scan photographic prints— its real value is as a film scanner. It can handle both positive and negative film (including slides) in sizes ranging from 35mm to as large as 8 by 10 inches. You don't have to look any further than the price to know that it's aimed at serious photographers who insist on high-quality scans. More important, it delivers enough to make it our Editors' Choice for a top-quality film scanner, particularly for prosumers. The V800 ($2,884.10 at Amazon) is the next-generation version of the highly regarded Epson Perfection V700 Photo ($1,249.99 at Amazon) , which it is in the process of replacing. It offers many of the same features, including a claimed 6,400-pixel-per-inch (ppi) optical resolution and a 4.0 Dmax rating, which promises the ability to distinguish small changes in shading over the full range from white to black, particularly for shadow detail (details based on shading ...
Pros:
  • High-quality scans for photographic prints and film (including slides)
  • Scan modes range from full auto to full control over settings
Cons:
  • Doesn't come with a photo editor or any other application program

Quality pictures, easy to use, fast and dependable

I have used it for a year, primarily on thousands of slides and a number of photos. It was easy to setup and operate. The finished product is superb and easy to bring into the computer. It is a good product and easily does all it is supposed to do

A pain to set up, but a great scanner

Software a bit of a hassle to set up. Instructions are dismal. However, the scans are excellent once you get it set up and figure out the software. The colors are accurate, and the scans are sharp. The holders are quite nice, especially for scanning slides.

Mostly good but some issues

My 700 died right in the middle of a project so I needed to replace it fast. I liked the 700 so I bought the 800 - it's mostly good. Sadly, it has the exact same capabilities of the 700 with the exception of some lenses that help when scanning slides or negatives.

Finally Have One, Lives Up to the Hype

As far as scanners go, this is hardly my first rodeo: Starting with a used Nikon LS-10 35mm scanner over 20 years ago, Ive gotten a taste of scanners in various formats, and even though Ive been almost exclusively using 35mm up until very recently, Ive understood the virtues of high-quality flatbeds...

V800

A bought this product to replace a 4990 that developed stripes when scanning 35 mm slides. Having used it mainly in wintertime the same problem has occurred with the V800 just two years after purchase. While the quality of the scans is very good, I'm disappointed with the durability of the V800
