Put your helmet on and run away fast
Purchased this when a cheap plastic gear in my Scanjet 5370C wore out with no way to purchase replacement. I have no 3D printer, which could easily make a replacement gear. There is an image of a giant lollypop labeled "Sucker" floating over my head next to the image of a giant wood screw.
Pros:
- Produces 6-color images
- Two lamps, one infrared (or ultraviolet) for removing scratches
- 4800x9600 resolution
- Does lots of 35mm film and slides at once, so says the advertisement
Cons:
- Violet-blue-grey vertical streaks washes white documents. Even with nothing on the scanner glass, the white paper press does not scan in white. Easy to fix in GIMP, increase contrast to +60%
- not willing to experiment with color photos

HP Scanjet G4050 is versatile and quiet
This is my second G4050 and is just as reliable as my first one, but much quieter. You don't hear a blower fan start on power up, and the scan sweep sound is barely perceptible to other workers closeby. The unit is handsome and compact as well, and has a dignity all its own.

It's an okay scanner with lots of features, but you will have to mess with it a lot to get good results.
It will batch scan a lot 35mm strips at a time, that was my rational for buying it over the epson variant which only does two strips of negatives at a time. The stock software is pretty crummy, unlike the epson software (I use the v700 at work), so I bought vuescan software.
