Master & Dynamic MH40 Review

Master & Dynamic's MH40 headphones are luxuriously crafted, sound terrific, and are well worth the high price. While Beats opened up the headphone market for lovers of massive bass response, companies like Bowers & Wilkins have carved out a niche in the headphone realm for users looking for luxury. Relative newcomer Master & Dynamic use fine leathers and a plethora of unique accessories, including a desktop stand for your headphones, to entice you to get the MH40. But beyond its looks and comfortable feel, it's the MH40's superb audio performance that makes it worth the $399 price. Every aspect is luxurious, including its sound signature, earning it our Editors' Choice award. DesignThe visual design of the MH40 is striking, with luxurious materials and a sturdy frame. The headphones are offered in three styles: black leather with black metal, black leather with gunmetal-colored metal, and brown leather with silver metal. The lambskin circumaural (over-the-ear) earpads are exceptionally comfortable, and the headband is well cushioned so, despite its healthy weight, the MH40 doesn't become ...
Pros:
  • Excellent audio performance
  • Handsome design with luxurious materials
  • Plenty of accessories, including a desktop stand
Cons:
  • Expensive
  • Bulky

Master & Dynamic MH40 Wireless Review

The Master & Dynamic MH40 Wireless headphones combine luxurious materials with a strong focus on clear, accurate audio quality. In 2015, we reviewed the first product from Master & Dynamic, the wired MH40 headphones. Now we're reviewing their Bluetooth reboot, the $299 MH40 Wireless. They're meant to seamlessly replicate the grace and excellent sound signature of the original MH40, and for the most part, they nail it. The sound signature isn't for those seeking heavily boosted bass, but rather a flat-response-like accuracy. Combined with a luxurious build, it makes for a fitting update to the original, and a strong option for anyone seeking accurate wireless headphones. Design Available in all-black, black and gunmetal, or brown and silver, the MH40 Wireless headphones have circumaural (over-ear) cups that hug the ear tightly. The fit is comfortable, though you might find the overall feel a little bulky. The look is the signature Master & Dynamic blend of retro and modern, with details like a demarcated headband adjustor for a precise ear-to-ear fit, and a blend of materials, from metal to lambskin leather...
Pros:
  • Strong audio performance with rich, accurate bass depth and a focus on details and clarity in the highs
  • Excellent mic intelligibility
  • Luxurious build
  • Some passive noise reduction thanks to thick earpads
Cons:
  • Lacks AAC Bluetooth codec support
  • No app

They effectively are physically identical. And yet, the new version sells for $399 — $100 more than their predecessors. So why would you consider upgrading, or buying the new MH40 W over their many excellent competitors? Let’s check them out. In a hurry? Here’s the TL;DR on the new 2023 model: A big part of the M&D product experience is the design. If you’re content with basic black plastic headphones, let me save you some time and money: the MH40 W aren’t the headphones you’re looking for. If, however, you feel that your headphones should help you stand out from the crowd (and not in a neon cat ears kind of way), the MH40 W remain one of the classiest ways to go. The 2023 model keeps every single original element intact. The vintage aviator-inspired look is at its most authentic in the cans’ silver/brown gu...
